The government led by Claudia Sheinbaum requested 90 thousand 166 million pesos for the development of passenger and freight trains as part of the 2025 Federal Expenditure Budget Project, the first that corresponds to the new president. According to the document presented by the Secretary of Finance, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, to the Chamber of Deputies, the requested budget includes the carrying out of studies and the first stages of the trains that will run from Mexico City to Querétaro, Nogales, and also the one that will connect Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) with Pachuca.
"The expansion of the freight and passenger railway system is a priority for the administration and will bring benefits to companies and the population," emphasized de la O during the presentation of the Project.
Regarding the use of resources from the 2025 PPEF in the railway system, it is established that they will be allocated to continue developing the Maya Train, as well as to complete the construction of the first stage of the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train.
On the other hand, the Mexico-Querétaro train is a railway project resumed from the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto, which was tendered and then canceled after the participation of a company (OHL) involved in alleged acts of corruption that implicated its own participation in the railway project. Despite President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's attempts to revive the project with a Public-Private Partnership, this did not materialize.
It is now expected that the train will connect the Buenavista station in Mexico City with the capital of Querétaro using a special track for passenger transportation, instead of the freight railway tracks, as had been initially proposed.
